Laura Wanamaker
Postpartum Doula and Newborn Care Specialist

What I bring to you is a philosophy of “What does the mother want?”  Every mother and family can require different needs. As an Infant Feeding Specialist, I completely respect how you choose to feed your baby.  I will provide a mother with all the positive and medical information needed if she really wants to try successful nursing, but its a personal decision. Even if you know you don’t feel nursing is for you or try it and realize you prefer formula and bottles, then do it. I value how you want to care for your baby in any capacity. Doulas never diagnose as we are not medical professionals and should never represent that we are. As an example, recognizing the difference between a clogged milk duct as opposed to potential mastitis is imperative. That’s where a doula can really help.  Helping with techniques to alleviate that problem and getting the baby back to the breast is what is really needed.

How is a doula trained?

Doulas are trained and certified by a doula credentialing agency such as ProDoula. The process includes in person training, research, extensive reading, essays and working with clients. Once that is completed a doula becomes a certified professional.  Postpartum doulas assist in all aspects of the mothers care, emotionally and physically during the days and weeks after giving birth.

The presence of a doula has been shown to lessen the feelings of isolation and build confidence as a parent. We are not medical providers but are trained to see what looks normal and what might need professional care. We greatly encourage the mothers to have diligent hygiene and care for their healing bodies.  We offer suggestions on episiotomy and C-section healing. We help assess and encourage good nutrition and address issues such as constipation, anemia, low milk supply, over supply and engorgement. Doulas also can assist in what to ask your provider on your next check up for herself and for the baby's appointment.
